Layla Garina and the Second Chance Agency by Susan J Barrett

You’re 10 years old. The person you love most has just been arrested. Your world has turned upside down. You don’t know who to trust.

Do you:
a) Go to your bedroom and hide under the duvet until it’s all OK again?
b) Write this life off and start saving for your next incarnation?
c) Round up your closest friends to help you fight for justice against all the odds?

Layla Garina is a Reincarnated Individual (RI), and there’s only one choice for her. In a world where you can pay to be born again, she’s being raised by her much-loved guardian Carmel, but when Carmel is arrested for genetic theft after two blood samples go missing, Layla’s idyllic childhood is interrupted. She and her friends are determined to prove Carmel’s innocence and identify the real perpetrator, so that their lives can return to normal.

But what’s so special about the two samples that were stolen? And who do they belong to?

In their efforts to liberate Carmel, the children discover that not all RIs are created equal. As a consequence, some of their lives will change forever.

Picking up this book and starting it I did wonder what I was letting myself in for but as the plot went along I grew to like this book more.

The story focuses around Layla a ten year old RI ( reincarnated individual) . This is only available to the rich and elite. The characters in the book are all interesting although there are lots of children in Layla’s house and that was sometimes hard to follow. The ending leaves lots of questions unanswered and draws the reader to wanting more.

This book was real science fiction and although this book is aimed at middle grade / young adult however I think it should be more in the young adult genre given the nature of the book and some long words that ten year olds may not understand.

Through chatting with Susan I understand she would like to change the cover of the book too and I agree it needs to attract readers more.

This book is well written and I understand there is to be a book two.

A well deserved 4 stars.
